I have always loved spending time in the great outdoors. From childhood adventures to progressing through the Scouting movement—from Beavers and Cubs to Scouts and Venture Scouts—nature has been a constant source of enjoyment and inspiration. I am an enthusiastic hiker and cyclist, both on and off road, and have taken part in camping trips across the UK, France, Holland, and Ireland.
My interest in teaching, learning, and the natural world began during my A-Level studies, when fieldwork in North Yorkshire sparked a deep curiosity about ecology and the environment.
During a gap year in the USA, I worked as a Camp Counsellor at a summer camp in the Redwood Forest of Northern California. I also volunteered with a local youth group, organising outdoor activities along the nearby beaches and in the surrounding forest.
After returning to the UK, I studied at the University of Leeds, where I became a member of the University Boat Club. Much of my time was spent rowing on the River Ouse in York, experiencing the changing seasons from the water. Following graduation, I moved back to Sheffield and completed a PGCE in Primary Education at Sheffield Hallam University.
Throughout my teaching career, I have developed a strong belief that learning should be enjoyable, engaging, and meaningful. Whenever possible, I incorporate Outdoor Learning to inspire my pupils. I make full use of whatever outdoor spaces are available, as I believe children learn best through direct experiences that encourage curiosity, inquiry, experimentation, and reflection.
In early 2019, I qualified as a Level 3 Forest Schools Practitioner. I now divide my time between classroom teaching at a primary school in Chesterfield and leading Forest School sessions—continuing to share my passion for nature, exploration, and learning with the next generation.
